The Tarot Guild

Tarot for the 21st Century!

I am learning to use The Elder Futhark Runes on top of the Tarot and have been told by others that it is a good thing, that often Runes are Complimentary with Tarot. So I was merely just curious to hear on what other members had to say.

What were your Thoughts Or Experiences Using the Runes. Was It the Elder Futhark? Or a Different type of runes (I have heard that there are more than one -type- but have not heard anything about it.

Was the Reading with Runes alone? Tarot and Runes? I am curious to hear thoughts and experiences.

I was curious because I found a couple Of sets in really nice colors. One was sort of a shimmering Copper with gold symbols, but the one i chose was more of a teal/ Sea green color, a really nice one with gold symbols and a dark blue holding bag
I wish I could find a website, but Its at a store called Roxx. It was one of the stores that sells various polished rocks, Geodes, crystals, pendants, and other forms of things like meditative Cds. And It wasnt real copper, it was just painted a copper color and it was all glittery :p

They Were 39.99 but it was 50% off so only came to around $20 ($23 to be exact, $3 for the dark blue velvet holding bag. (My all Time favorite color is Blue - Any shade...as long as its blue)
How are you using the Runes on top of the Tarot? Are you using them in conjunction/together with Tarot readings or in addition to them? I've never really been able to figure out how to mix different modalities and am curious about how other folks do it.
Hi Steven,

I've been studying the Elder Futhark for.. omg.. over a decade now. They don't map directly to tarot, but there are some similarities between the meanings of some of the major arcana. The hardest part about runes is you don't get a nice picture that can help if you don't remember what they mean. I'm still learning, but they are very powerful, and have given me the "smack upside the head" I've needed at certain points in my life.

There are 3 other types of runes commonly used - there's a Younger futhark, an Anglo-Saxon futhark, and there are sets out there called witches runes which have nothing to do with the traditional runes as far as I can tell. The Elder, Younger and Anglo-Saxon futharks are actually alphabets, so you can do fun things like writing messages or your name in them. I really recommend Diana Paxon's "Taking up the Runes" if you're wanting to jump in with both feet. It's like a textbook, almost, and has one of the most comprehensive lists of meanings by different scholars. There are other, smaller books as well that I could recommend if you like.

I usually do readings of either tarot or runes, sometimes back-to-back about the same question. I always get the same answers when I do that, which is nice for validation that I read them correctly. :) Send me a message if you want more info, and I'm slowly adding stuff to my web site (evergreentarot.com), there's some stuff about runes on my blog.

So I guess that's my long winded way of saying, go get 'em, and I'm here if you have questions. :)

Peace,
-kim
Looking forward to hearing the responses. I've never tried the runes, but combining various tools seems like a good idea.
Wow I have never seen anyone done readings with runes in conjunction with tarot before.

I've only come across one Rune reader who found the stones himself and did the markings on them by himself. I thought it was really cool. Most of the outcome I got from it seemed pretty accurate (he was still learning too) and it aligned with the results when I did readings with tarot card.

I remember there were a different group of people in South Africa who specialized in runes, but they use bones and necklaces too? I forgot what they were called but yeah in the end they are great tools!
my tarot deck Pearls of Wisdom uses Runes throughout, I found it gave the cards deeper meaning and I love runes. Roxi
