On using The Elements:

Here are just the basic rules I use for using elements at this point - for me it also helps to visualize how the elements affect each other in nature - like how wind spreads a fire or water helps put the fire out - also I've found it helps to come up with positive, neutral and negative keywords for each tarot card so I have somewhere to start from.  But initially I found just these basic principles easy to remember and use -- I just haven't quite got into the more elaborate elemental dignity theories yet:

  1. Fire and Air are friendly and active
  2. Water and Earth are friendly and passive
  3. Fire and Water are enemies; they weaken each other
  4. Air and Earth are enemies; they weaken each other
  5. Fire and Earth strengthen each other but are neutral
  6. Water and Air strengthen each other but are neutral

And I've been using the Golden Dawn system for elemental attributes for the Major Arcana.  But, I still have a lot to learn... and at this point I have decided not to get into the whole male/female attributes because I just think it's a bit sexist -e.g.  "passive=female" so I use wands/swords are active and water/earth is passive.  I have to say at this point for me, using elemental dignities has been more meaningful than using reversals which I've never felt comfortable with because I feel like I'm interfering when I randomly flip some cards over... but that's just me.  Wondering -- does anyone else use the elements in lieu of reversals?

oh cool - thanks Dax - like I said I still have a lot to learn - just starting to wrap my head around all the different permutations - I want to mention also that I have found Anna Burroughs Cook's Tarot Dynamics incredibly helpful in developing my understanding of the elements - for example, Anna refers to Pentacles (earth) as "Ambition" and Cups (water) as "emotion"... so now, when I'm studying a pentacles card I think of both "ambition" and "earth" and then look at the cards surrounding to see how either the element of earth is affected by say water and then I think of how emotion may be affecting ambition... like is the water enough to mix with the earth and become building bricks or is it too much and causing erosion... does that make sense?
Yes, Mary. I don't read reversed either.I always think about balanced vs. overcompensating vs. unexpressed. Never thought about it as being instead of reversals, but that really works! I Love your way of looking at the elements! And I to have issues with the masculine & feminine attributes thing. Love too the whole imagining the elements--I spent a lot of time doing that! Helped me way more than reading about it!  I have four vids up on youtube under Inner Voice Intuitive on everything elemental! Feel free to leave feedback there or here! It's exciting to think someone does the whole creative visualisation thing with the elements! That approach has helped me grow so much personally & professionally! :)
That sounds cool - I'll check out the vids.  it's so amazing to me how many systems there are. Mostly I check out the ones I'm drawn to and skip the ones that don't feel right to me, though it's great to explore why something doesn't feel right as well - glad to hear someone else feels that way about reversals and masc/fem :)
hi mary i hope your doing great i like learning about the elements it plays an important role in tarot and your ideals on fire and water etc makes a lot of sense that is great post some more information so us beginners can learn more as we go thanks alot for the information it made my day lol

Hi B!

Aww, thanks - I'm a beginner as well... I just love that the Tarot Guild exists.  It's so wonderful to be able to ask questions and share what we've learned with people who really care about Tarot and are so knowledgeable in so many different areas - the diversity here rocks!  I've learned so much already on these discussion threads and listening to the podcasts. Glad I got a chance to make your day!

I love this! I actually keep a chart using the symbols taped in my journal for quick reference. I like to think of femine as receptive rather than passive. Cups receive water, water receives items {ie fish, ice cubes, etc} earth receives the rain, seeds etc. The symbols have a triangle with the base pointing up, ready to receive.
Yes it seems sexist because it rather is. But we as women should never be passive, as in allowing others to take our power. Or make us receive what we do not want or what is bad for us.
Is that a little soap boxy? Sorry! LOL.
Priscilla. :}
Rock on Sister!  I definitely like the "receptive" idea better!

Nope, not to me. Receptivity is often the greatest strength! :D
