Tarot - A Universal Gift by Dawn Alice

Selecting and cleansing cards

Traditionally your first tarot cards should be a gift. If you receive, a deck as a present then consider yourself lucky … this may be an omen.

Selecting cards can be as personal as choosing your underwear. They should reflect your personality and fit comfortably. You will be entranced by the deck that suits you best when your heart responds to their beauty.

It is preferable that cards have not been opened when purchased.

Second-hand decks are not recommended for readings, but could be an interesting collector’s item or learning tool. It is not customarily to handle acclimatized cards with the energy of the previous owner.

If you are endowed with a deck from a loved one whose energy you are comfortable with; go ahead, but cleanse them first.

If a deceased person has bequeathed their cards down to you, it could be possible that they are working with you on a spiritual level.

New cards should be cleansed when they first come out of the pack, and as an ongoing basis. Each reader will have their method of purifying.

The first and simplest method is recognized as ‘white lighting’.

Relax and take a few breaths, become aware of white light entering the crown of your head. Pull this light down to your forehead and let it sit for a moment between your eyebrows (this is the position of your third or spiritual eye). Project the white light out through your third eye onto the cards as you shuffle.

Prayer empowers the white light effect. Prayer is simply an effectual tool, enabling us to tap the universal power, and putting our sub-conscious mind to work. However you pray, or whatever fits in with your beliefs will work.

Breath is life, so breathe life into your cards. Inhale through your nose, and gently exhale out through your mouth as you shuffle your cards.

As time rolls on and you acquire consecutive decks; spread the new deck over the top of the old deck to incorporate the accumulated energies.

Keeping tarot sacred

When do tarot cards magically turn from pieces of cardboard with pictures, which very few really understand, to these amazing keys that unlock sacred knowledge?

Tarot cards have to be activated, otherwise they simply remain cardboard. Set your cards into action by cleansing, energizing and protecting them.

You may think this all sounds like a lot of gobble gosh, but if you have any understanding of energy then it makes sense. Children don’t analyse why they need their special blanket or teddy, and what about men who love that old arm chair? Our energy gets into things and what better way to feel safe and secure than to feel your own personal energy.

Being in touch with your own energy is to connect to the most sacred and deepest part of your soul.
